A report from New York!

Hello, Austin Cabaret Theatre friends and fans!

I just returned from New York where I had the honor to MC the Rockette Alumnae Reunion! What a great time, and what great ladies. Austin Cabaret Theatre was very well represented and promoted at the event, which included alum chums Suzanne Moore, and Darlene Whittaker (whom I had not seen in roughly 20 years!!!). I also got to attend the tech rehearsal for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, in addition to Hosting the Alumnae Gala.
Speaking of alumnae, I got to catch up with some ACT guest artists:
Michael Holland and Karen Mack (Gashole!) returned triumphantly to the Duplex on Saturday Nov 7th with their all-request show. They took a leave of absence to participate in the new musical festival with the show that Michael is doing the music for, and Karen is producing, called Hurricane.
Also caught Kevin Spirtas in a new off-Broadway play called Loaded. Very well done, well acted, directed and produced.
Got to do brunch with Paige Davis who is in rehearsals for a new production of I Do, I Do! with her real-life husband Patrick Page. It will premiere in December at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre.
A couple cocktails were consumed with Natalie Douglas and her hubby Billy Joe Young, as well.
This was the night after Natalie knocked 'em out during Jim Caruso's Cast Party at Birdland, with a selection from her brand new Lena Horne tribute. Jim and Natalie chatted on stage about her recent return from Austin Cabaret Theatre, and pointed yours truly out--with Jim Caruso saying that ACT was a gem of a place to work!
A hi-light of the trip was seeing A Steady Rain, the limited Broadway run starring Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. Talk about perfection in casting and ability, these men give a simultaneously warm yet chilling performance. One of the best pieces of theatre I've ever had the honor to attend.

I remember all my life, crooning into my hairbrush along with Barry Manilow on the radio.
Was it just me, singin' to the world??? Barry's indelible mark on the music industry can't be ignored. Well, Austin, this one's for you...a music town celebrating a music man. He writes the songs that make the whole world sing, you know.
Austin Cabaret Theatre tries to bring you the most diverse cabaret entertainment all the time...and this show is no exception. I'm ready to take a chance again on another energy-packed show--so don't miss this one! You'll be sorry! I've looked high, low, everywhere I possibly can for quality theatre like this.

Forty years ago, the world lost one of the world's most legendary entertainers. This season, we're bringing her back! On January 8, 2010, ACT proudly presents four-time Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year JIM BAILEY as JUDY GARLAND LIVE!

I know, I know...I took a bit of a hiatus from the blog...not intentional, just been completely absorbed getting the 2009-2010 Season lined up! (more about that later...)
Meanwhile, last night ACT received an Austin Critic's Table Award for our presentation of Elaine Stritch...At Liberty...at Austin Cabaret Theatre! Thank you, Critic's Table (click to see all the recipients), for the recognition!
ALSO...our website is back up and running! We will be fine-tuning it over the next several months, so check it frequently and make sure you pass it on to anyone who loves great entertainment.

The really big news is that Austin Cabaret Theatre moves to its new home this Fall:
THE LONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS!
This incredible facility will provide TWO spaces for ACT productions. The stunning Kodosky Room, with floor-to-ceiling windows and the city as our backdrop, and the wonderful Rollins Theatre. Plus you'll still have the option for pre-show dining as we move to a plated, served gourmet meal...that's right--no more standing in line! Let the fine staff of Sterling Affairs serve you!
As if this wasn't enough to make you completely delirious, The new season is called GUILTY PLEASURES and will be like that proverbial box of chocolates...delicious and filled with surprises!
Now admit it...you've closed the bedroom door and sung into your hairbrush to Barry Manilow on the radio. We all have. What's a bigger guilty pleasure than "Mandy," or "I Write The Songs?" Therefore, the Season kicks off with Lennie Watts in Manilow: '73-'83! It's a retro-spective of Barry's hits from that 10 year period. Mr. M. himself saw the show and said "Finally, somebody gets what I've been trying to do all these years!"

Next, picture a dark bar. Through the haze you see a sultry singer belting some of the most heavenly, complex, and heady music you've ever heard. It's the music of Nina Simone, and award-winner Natalie Douglas puts her indelible mark on this songbook in her critically acclaimed show, To Nina...

Come winter time, everyone needs some warmth...but we make it Hot-Hot-Hot when we turn our showroom into a cruise ship for the night, with Love Boat...TWISTED! Leave the sea-sick pills at home, but we encourage you to wear your grass skirt or swim suit!

Stardust. Georgia On My Mind. Skylark. Lazy River...the list goes on. Hoagy Carmichael is considered one of the best American songwriters of the last century. The Latest from the Big Apple...

Greetings!
I have just returned from New York, and a whirl-wind cabaret and theatre trip that still has me flying high. National Board member Jody Jackson and I had some theatrical "catch-up" to do, and since it was spring break, she brought along her daughter, Bailey, and daughter's best friend, Morgan. Good girls. For teenagers. 'Nuff said.
(kidding--adore you both!!!)
Upon arrival, dinner of course at Chez Josephine, then a dash up to Bemelmen's Bar at the Carlyle to hear our fav's, the Loston Harris Trio. While there, Tony--the magnificent maitre'd in the Cafe Carlyle--came through and invited us to Barbara Junger's 10:45 show. In a word, DIVINE. This British chanteuse blew us away. I had lunch with her a few days later, and we're starting the "ball rolling" to bring her to ACT.
The matinee of Distracted (a Roundabout Theatre production), starred "Sex In The City's" Cynthia Nixon and was sheer genuis. Funny, touching, thoughtful, and impeccably directed.
That evening was a performance of Hair that was one of the most celebratory evenings of theatre I've had in a long time (outside of Austin Cabaret Theatre, of course!). The uber-talented cast of this revival deserves a Tony Award for Best Ensemble performance.
A lovely coffee date with singer-songwriter Amanda Green was terrific, and talks are underway to get this wildly talented woman to Austin, as well.
John Tartaglia's cabaret at Feinstein's was absolutely darling--fun, sweet, delightful--all the things John himself is. That was followed up by an incredible evening at Birdland for Jim Caruso's Cast Party!
Tuesday evening brought us to Blithe Spirit starring Angela Lansbury, Christine Ebersole, and Rupert Everett. This Noel Coward revival boasted strong performances, despite some lacking direction.
Any chance to see Ms. Lansbury on stage is truly an honor, and she didn't disappoint!
Post-bows, we dashed up to the Iridium Jazz Room to hear Terese Genecco and her "little big band." Anyone who can do justice to the songbook of Francis Faye is ok in my book.
The matinee of B'way's revival of West Side Story closed the trip (ok, the show, then a cosmo at Sardi's...), and while uneven, had many high points--namely Matt Cavinaugh's rendition of "Maria," which can make even the most jaded theatre-goer swoon. An extra plus was going to the show with the brilliant Paige Davis and her dashing husband, Patrick Page.
When not sitting in a theatre or cabaret room, Jody and I were shopping for some finishing touches on the apartment...

Back from "Circling the Globe" to bring you the best entertainment!

Ok, so really I was on vacation...
BUT...

while in London and Paris I did take advantage of the extraordinary entertainment scene.
We caught the delightful West End revival of La Cage aux Folles starring the talented Graham Norton. I wish HE would have done the role on Broadway instead of the scenery-chewing, mugging mess that was Gary Beach.

But I digress...

We also went to Madame JoJo's to catch a mixed bag cabaret night...the outstanding segment being a duo called Frisky and Mannish who were the British equivalent of Holland and Mack, two ACT favorites.
Clever, brilliant stuff.

In Paris, naturally we had to catch the new show at The Lido, a mainstay of extravagant entertainment. A LOT of birds died to costume that show...wow...
The architecture was stunning in both cities, and we made some terrific friends, namely Stuart Saint (thank you, Jenny Stewart!!!) in London, and Ali & Guillaume in Paris, who design and operate my new favorite jewelry boutique, Gavilane. I bought lots of it. You'll be seeing it at our shows...

Many of you have seen the amazing, talented, and stunning ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY on our stage at Austin Cabaret Theatre. If you haven't seen her, then you simply do not know what you're missing. I managed to grab drinks with buddies Doug Wilson (also from TLC) and Randall Tang, make-up genius to the stars...a terrific evening and much needed diversion from the work-load of the trip.

Finally, DON'T FORGET we have SHARON MONTGOMERY gracing our stage at The Mansion at Judges' Hill on March 26-27.

A (belated) New York report and WHAT's NEXT!!!

December of 2008 brought laughter and tears, both.
The loss of the extraordinary (and ACT alum) Eartha Kitt was a blow.
(see previous blog)
However, in E.K.'s celebratory spirit, we press onward and upward. And one of the most soaring, life-altering shows I've seen in a long time was LIZA'S AT THE PALACE. It went beyond my wildest dreams, and prominently featured ACT's next stellar entertainers,

Ok, back to New York...
With raised eyebrow and crossed arms I took my seat at All My Sons, thinking "Ok, Mrs. Tom Cruise, let's see how you fare with real actors." I had to revise that line of thinking. John Lithgow, brilliant. Dianne Wiest, heartbreakingly real. Patrick Wilson, transcendant. Katie Holmes, terrific. I got to go to the opening night party for the show back in the Fall, and am thrilled I finally got to see it.
I took in the new Roundabout Theatre production of Pal Joey. Stockard Channing was not only stunning, but perfect in the role of Vera Simpson. And Martha Plimpton was hysterical--and brilliantly bitchy--as Gladys Bumps. Matthew Risch--replacing the injured Christian Hoff permanently in the production--did the best he could with an unlikeable character, Joey. Gorgeous show, as all are at Roundabout, but not my favorite thing they've ever done...
We found ourselves at the DUPLEX to catch Michael Holland and Karen Mack (also ACT alums and chums) and had a ball. Or was it a high-ball? or four?
Love them.
Naturally, it wasn't the Holidays without the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes. If you have never gone, just book the trip now. I promise you it's worth it.
Joe's Pub brought us the most irreverant, dirty, politically incorrect, HYSTERICAL and FABULOUS show, Jackie Hoffman: Scraping the Bottom--the Hannukah Show.
And I desperately want to book it for ACT.
So...now you're caught up!

Celebrating the purr-fectly marvelous life of EARTHA KITT...

Christmas Day was a bitter-sweet one for me, and for many here in Austin and around the world. Singer-Actress-Dancer-Diva EARTHA KITT left us. But how fabulous that the woman who gave us "Santa Baby" would depart our world on this of all days!
When I brought Eartha down to Austin Cabaret Theatre for our 2006 Gala, it was an event unlike any other.
Gracious, grand, generous of time, and mischievously funny, Miss Kitt won over our multi-generational audience from her first purr.
She won me over long before that, and through the years I'm so blessed to have been her sounding-board, occasional director, and--best of all--friend.
No one was a better poster child for enjoying the finer things in life than Miss Kitt. In one concert, she casually told the audience, "...my favorite meal happens to be Salad Endive, Beluga Caviar, Filet Mignon, and Dom Perignon Champagne. Thanks to all of you, I can afford it now."
So...please...raise your glasses high, ladies and gentlemen, and let's have a toast to my buddy.
We're going to miss you, E.K. Thanks for being one of the finer things in my life.

At the end of October, I high-tailed it down to Houston's Theatre Lab for a performance by my friend and former boss Susan Claassen in her one-woman tour-de-force, A Conversation With Edith Head. Based on the famed costume designer, it's equal parts entertaining and educational. Suz just returned from a smash run in London's West End. Not only does she bear an uncanny resemblance to Ms. Head, she becomes the dazzling & difficult diva of design. And Theatre Lab did a beautiful job presenting her. Perhaps one day soon we can get this show to Austin!

Lots of fun was had at our first annual Halloween Party.
It was a small affair here in the neighborhood, but next year...LOOK OUT!
We're going to "scare" up a bunch of people, have some great food for "goblin" up, and make it a fundraiser for Austin Cabaret Theatre. We did take some donations at the party for ACT (big, BIG thanks to those who so charitably gave). Also, a big thanks goes to Brian Jenson and Rick Payton for the food preparation. So mark your calendars for next Halloween...it would be a "grave" mistake to miss it!

I can't wait to see you all at the next show...round up the troops, forward this to your friends, let's fill the place and wipe out heart disease!!!

THE BIG APPLE REPORT!

Ok, kids! Grab a cup of coffee or a cocktail (depending on the time of day...) and settle in! This post has "all the news that's fit to print...and then some!"

First off, a fabulous time was had by all with the incomparable AMANDA McBROOM and MICHELE BROURMAN. You missed a p-a-r-t-y if you missed that show.
I just can't thank these delightful and TALENTED ladies enough. What a TERRIFIC show...

Now...NEW YORK:

I was in the big, bad Apple for the annual Broadway Cabaret Festival, which is an excellent opportunity for me to view potential Artists to bring to ACT. Being the superstitious fella that I am, I won't put in print who is being considered for the 09/10 Season, but if ya call me I might tell ya!

Also got to visit with Liz Callaway, and Alex Rybeck, both Austin Cabaret Alumni.

The best part of being in New York was my best big city pal JODY JACKSON came with me. The moment we stepped out of the hotel and I offered her my arm, she cried out "At last, my arm is whole again!!!" I guess that makes me Mrs. Lovett.

Beyond the convention, I was able to take in some other entertainment, as well...starting with the revival of EQUUS on Broadway. Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe lead the strong cast in this classic by Peter Shaffer. I will forego the temptation to make a joke about seeing Harry Potter's magic wand (oops, guess I did it anyway...). The production values were stunning, the acting superb.

Also on tap was the new musical Billy Elliot direct from a successful London premiere. The show at the Imperial Theatre was quite good...I liked it but didn't love it.
On Thursday I went to DON'T TELL MAMA's to see Seth Rudetsky's Chatterbox. This is a weekly "must-do" as each week Seth brings in a different B'way star in an informal "talk-show" format. His guest was Lin-Manuel Miranda, writer and Tony winner for IN THE HEIGHTS...

...which I saw last season and loved. Look for Lin-Manuel's work in the revival of WEST SIDE STORY coming soon to Broadway. He is doing the lyric translation for the songs that are sung by the "Sharks," which will all be in Spanish. Great concept...

I took in the play TO BE OR NOT TO BE, based on the movie(s) of the same title. Mother always told me that if I couldn't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

Hmmm...the sets were pretty.

I also attended the opening night party of ALL MY SONS. Very swanky, very exclusive. Very ME! (ha-ha-ha...)
I went as the "date" of dear bud Armando Licon, who does the wigs for GREASE on Broadway, and cuts the men's hair for ALL MY SONS...

...and he was able to get me into AMERICAN IDOL star ACE YOUNG's dressing room for a visit. Ace just stepped into the role of Kenicke in Grease. He is so gracious, charming, kind, and sweet. Thank you, Ace, for taking time to chat. And I'm serious about coming to Austin...your voice would be wonderful on the Great American Songbook...(write to him thru his website and tell him so, everyone!!!!!)

That's right, ladies...me alone with Ace...but don't worry, he totally plays for your team, girls.

And he really is gorgeous. I kinda hate him.

My friends Sara and Craig (Sara is with Sterling Affairs, the folks responsible for the amazing food at ACT, The Mansion, and The Long Center) were in town and we managed to squeeze in some time together, including dinner at my favorite Chez Josephine and it's brilliant "host-with-the-most" Jean-Claude Baker. We brunched at 44x10, and hit some of the sights...

Saturday brought me the matinee of A TALE OF TWO CITIES, The Musical. Picture a Lifetime Television mini-series based on the Dicken's novel as a musical. Yep.
Then, truly from the ridiculous to the sublime, I caught my friend Patrick Page (brilliantly portraying King Henry opposite Frank Langella's Sir Thomas Moore) in A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS. What an honor to take in that performance. Thanks for the fabulous seats, Patrick!!!

Monday night was an especially hysterical diversion, with CELEBRITY AUTOBIOGRAPHY at the Triad.

This wacky, wonderful show features a rotating cast of stars...our night included Kristen Johnston (worth the price of admission to hear her read from Mr. T's autobiography...), Matthew Broderick, Sherri Shepherd (hysterical as Elizabeth Taylor...), Seth Rudetsky, Susie Essman, and Eugene Pack. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Especially at the litany of food likes and dietary avoidances of Mr. Neil Sedaka. Crazy.

As if that wasn't enough, we followed it up with the tail end of the concert by Asian internet anomole Wing (my ears are still bleeding) and JIM CARUSO'S CAST PARTY! (don't forget, he's coming to Austin Cabaret Theatre in January!!!)

Tuesday night I caught ACT and Trading Spaces diva PAIGE DAVIS in the Broadway revival of BOEING BOEING (Paige, you ROCK with those tickets! THANKS!). My sides still hurt from laughing. Not only was Paige terrific (SO much fun to see her play a "brassier, more brazen" role than I'm used to!), but the entire ensemble knocks it out of the park. I also was able to visit with Broadway, TV, Film, and BOEING star CHRISTINE BARANSKI backstage after the show, in a meeting that Paige was kind enough to set up...we were discussing the possibility of an ACT appearance. Be still, my beating heart. Yes, kids, she's interested!

We went with fellow TS Designer Hildi and her gorgeous Mom, and followed up the show with dinner and drinks at Bar Central, where Katie Holmes was dining at the next booth. Only in New York.

If you're still with me at this point, congrats--you have more stamina than Lance Armstrong! I finished out the trip by seeing the Mamet play SPEED THE PLOW (for which a little stamina was also needed...). A huge thank you to the fabulous Irene Candy for arranging the seats. Jeremy Pivens was wonderful, Raul Esparza very strong, didn't like Elizabeth Moss. The best part was taking it in with my "separated-at-birth-fellow-Broadway-queen" Tommy O'Malley, who came down from Boston so we could catch up and laugh. Tommy used to be the arts features writer and critic at the Austin American-Statesman, who often would get us some great press. God, I miss him!!!

So that's it...EXCEPT that I am reminding you to get your tickets to KEVIN SPIRTAS at Austin Cabaret Theatre...call me at 453-2287. More about that next time...

Ok...Viva Las Vegas--
Opening with "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" was perfect for the much anticipated (well, by ME, anyway...) reunion concert of Donny & Marie.
Yes, Osmond.
The show was everything and more I could have wanted. The good parts were really good, and the bad parts were even better.
My favorite part of the show was the unintentionally hysterical moment, when during his Stevie Wonder tribute, Donny Osmond--the whitest man on the planet--sang the immortal phrase "Looking back on when I was a little nappy-headed boy..."
Now I ask you. Did no producer, director, dancer, or musician ever stop rehearsal and say, "Ummm, Donny...???"
I nearly wet my chair then fell off it. It seems, however, that I was the lone member of the sold-out crowd who found the hilarity in it.
They both looked fantastic, and are headed to the Flamingo Hilton this fall for an extended run. Who knows, maybe ACT will be next...?

Of course, how can you do Vegas and not go to the "grand-daddy" of all Vegas shows, Jubilee?!
It's the last of a dying breed...the gorgeous showgirls, over-the-top sets, enormous headdresses, and more feathers than even MY closet...what's not to love?
I mean, for goodness sake, they even sink the Titanic on stage.
My friend and ACT National Board member Jody Jackson (Miss Jackson if you're nasty...) had a total melt-down after the show which resulted in her shouting the now-immortal words, "If I see one more skinny bitch in a tight dress and high heels I'm going to knock her down!!!"
This phrase, naturally, was repeated often...though with less venom.

An OUTRAGEOUSLY good time was had at Bette Midler, The Showgirl Must Go On!
Classic Bette; bawdy, gaudy, and naughty!
Plus, her unbelievable skill of going from camp to heartfelt in the blink of an eye.
She is the entertainer's entertainer.
She'll be there in 6-week rotations with Elton John, and Cher...
or, as Bette puts it, "the trifecta of gay entertainment!"

I also caught the Cirque du Soliel show LOVE, featuring the music of the Beatles.
Gorgeous, as all their shows are.

Lunch with my friend Michael LaFleur--a fabulous director, artistic coordinator, producer, and all-around good guy was another high point. You thought I had stories??? He's the bomb. He shared a very funny story about running into Ms. Stritch on the street in NY.
He is hoping to come in for her show--he'll tell it to you!

I also squeezed in a meeting with Rene Ruiz, of Toxic Audio...plans are in the works for their Spring appearance at ACT! They are amazing!!! They just closed their critically-acclaimed Vegas show, and we got to catch one of the final performances.
In a word, brilliant!

A great time was had by all!

Hello, Friends!
Ok, before I get to some great news and interesting (I hope) sightings, I NEED YOUR HELP!
HELP! HELP! HELP!
I've mentioned before that--while I'm thrilled ACT is so highly regarded--I no longer want to be "Austin's best kept secret."
Marketing dollars are few, however. So...
Please do me a favor...Send this blog out to everyone you know who enjoys GREAT entertainment, because that's what Austin Cabaret Theatre provides. If each of you sent this out to just TWO friends (and they told two friends, and they told two friends...am I the only one old enough to remember that commercial? anyway...), we could do more with your help than any marketing budget could.
And when you have LEGENDARY DIVAS like ELAINE STRITCH coming in her TONY AWARD WINNING BROADWAY SHOW...well, what's not to like???
Ok...on to the dish--
I just got back from Los Angeles...it was great to be home, and although I got to have some fun (like going to Disneyland for my annual birthday pilgrimage), there was some work, too!
I took in a concert reading at the Festival for New Musicals called DANCE WITH ME, starring Jai Rodriguez, of Queer Eye fame. It was terrific to see him again, and we had some time to catch up after the show...Yes, we have been trying to get him to Austin Cabaret Theatre for a while. His voice is gorgeous, kids. But the best part was this show really shows off his acting chops. He brought tears to my eyes with his portrayal of a young Desi Arnaz. Also at the show was his Queer Eye companion (and host of the new hit How To Look Good Naked) Carson Kressley...who said to me...
"Have we met before? You look really familiar." Sadly, I was the only one of the two of us who found the irony in that statement.
I also took in a new play at Pasadena Playhouse: Looped, which stars Valerie Harper as Tallulah Bankhead. She was FIERCE, and the play is riotous.

Well, no one can say that Austin Cabaret Theatre doesn't offer something for everyone! The two nights of From the Ridiculous to the Sublime were loads of fun, with a variety of song, dance, silliness, and props.

LOTS of props.

Not to mention five costume changes, but who's counting?! Thanks everyone for the terrific feedback, and the lovely, warm reception. I was pretty sure you all would like selections such as "Who Can I Turn To," but when I threw in tunes about not wearing underwear or lesbian seagulls, who knows what can happen? Needless to say, everyone reacted just as I'd hoped, and I appreciate the enthusiastic responses.

"Pop!" goes the Workshop!

Not only did we have a FANTASTIC time with the enormously talented MICHAEL HOLLAND & KAREN MACK, but they also conducted a very enlightening workshop on how pop, rock, and contemporary music are becoming the mainstay of today's Musical Theatre.

Students from the St. Edward's University theatre program participated, performing both standard and contemporary show music, getting terrific feedback and advice from Karen & Michael.

Think of it as "Idol" without the snippy, nasty one...

The show was a huge success...I wasn't sure how my Great American Songbook-loving audiences were going to react to irreverant pop medleys, but suffice it to say, I'm surprised there's still a ceiling on the Mansion! What a welcome reception and outrageous response!

And let me tell you...phone calls from "Stritchie" are the best things in the world. I laugh my a** off. We sat recently in her apartment in NYC and we had a ball.
I really felt like one of the "ladies who lunch!"
(yes, she does it in the show!)
And what a pro. This octogenarian is feistier than a pit-bull, and brings more energy and entertainment to the stage than I've ever seen. It is, I think, the most perfectly crafted evening of theatre I've ever witnessed.

Hello, my lovelies!
Was in my dear Manhattan for 5 days, catching up on the newest offerings... One of my Board members (and fabulous friend) Jody and I had a "whirl-wind!"
Here's the down-and-dirty:
Caught the new B'way production of CRY BABY...naturally I cheered loudly because JOHN WATERS was sitting behind us.
Ok...what a LOVELY man. Gracious, charming, sweet, and we had a grand time. The choreography (Rob Ashford) is the most inventive and innovative I have seen in years on The Great White Way. First Act had some rough spots, second Act was divine, they are still in previews, so I'm sure that the things that need fixing will get fixed!
Also got to see IN THE HEIGHTS. Kids, RUN do not walk to see this. The hype is true, and the glowing reviews seem but a tiny ember compared to the GENIUS of this show.
wow-wow-wow-wow-wow!!!!
Visited with the cast backstage after the performance...and by visited, I mean did tequila shots in the stage manager's office with the kids in the show. What a great group. I'm in love with all of them--it was a banner day!
What else...?
Oh, yeah...more shots (Southern Comfort this time) backstage at the "Grease" revival.
Oh--took in Faith Prince (ACT Alum!) and her new show with Harvey Fierstein and Tom Wopat, A CATERED AFFAIR, directed by friend John Doyle (Sweeney Todd, Company). I tell ya, Faith is the actor's actor. COMPLETELY in the moment at every moment. There are some very compelling scenes, but sadly not enough of them. Again, still in previews, time to fix. John, if you're reading this, CALL ME! I don't have a Tony on my mantel like you, but I got some thoughts!
BARBARA COOK at The Carlyle was an inspiration. Her total breakdown during "Smile" was a little unnerving. Since we have some "history," I didn't feel like I was prying when we talked after. Her agent of 30+ years had died the day before. Keep her in your thoughts, gang. She is an icon--and I adore her. At any rate, it was good to see her again, and I always enjoy getting a hug from Barbara...when she hugs you, she means it.
The food was back up to snuff there, too--I had been disappointed the last couple times. Thanks, Anthony, you always do right by me for seating, too!
Naturally had to take in CAST PARTY with Jim Caruso at Birdland. Always fun fun fun!
Wrapped up with the off-Broadway run of "Fabulous Divas of Broadway" starring Alan Parker.
Nice idea. And that's all I have to say about it.
I'm sure I'll remember more tales to tell you when I catch up on my sleep!
